2013-12-01 · Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology has been used widely to understand the meaning of lived experiences in health research. For midwifery scholars this approach enables deep understanding of women's and midwives’ lived experiences of specific phenomena. However, for beginning researchers this is not a methodology for the faint hearted. Hermeneutical phenomenology (also hermeneutic phenomenology or post-phenomenology/postphenomenology elsewhere; see hermeneutics) studies interpretive structures of experience.

Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology as method: modelling analysis through a meta-synthesis of articles on Being-towards-death While the richness of Heideggerian philosophy is attractive as a healthcare research framework, its density means authors rarely utilise its fullest possibilities as an hermeneutic analytic structure. Hermeneutical phenomenology (also hermeneutic phenomenology or post-phenomenology / postphenomenology elsewhere; see hermeneutics) studies interpretive structures of experience. This approach was introduced in Martin Heidegger 's early work. Interpretive Hermeneutic Phenomenology: Clarifying Understanding by Ann E. McManus Holroyd Abstract Heidegger, as explained by Gadamer (1960/1989), speaks at great length about the disclosure of the fore-structure of understanding in the hermeneutic experience. The beginnings of hermeneutic phenomenology stem from a German researcher and student of Husserl, Martin Heidegger. Both researchers attempted to pull out the lived experiences of others through philosophical concepts, but Heidegger’s main difference from Husserl was his belief that consciousness was not separate from the world but a formation of who we are as living individuals. [63] The thoroughly hermeneutic character of human life is emphatically conveyed by Heidegger’s properly hermeneutical translation of Aristotle’s definition of the human being as zoon logon echon, not in the traditional manner as the “rational animal” but rather as the living being possessive of, and possessed by speech, of which the loquacious Greeks were his prime example.

Hermeneutic Phenomenology - Joseph J Kockelmans - Paperback

Heidegger clarifies the role played by hermeneutics in his early phenomenological inquiries into human existence through a critical reconsideration of Husserl’s classical phenomenology, or more specifically, a critical reconsideration of the aspects of Husserl’s phenomenology that rely on his transcendental and eidetic methods. Hermeneutic phenomenology is a qualitative research methodology that arose out of and remains closely tied to phenomenological philosophy, a strand of continental philosophy.

Both researchers attempted to pull out the lived experiences of others through philosophical concepts, but Heidegger’s main difference from Husserl was his belief that consciousness was not separate from the world but a formation of who we are as living individuals. [63] This chapter analyzes the relationship between hermeneutic phenomenology and transcendental philosophy in Heidegger’s Being and Time. This work exhibits conflicting tendencies. On the one hand, it aims to single out the essential structures of any human existence and in so doing exemplifies the ahistorical mode of philosophizing characteristic of transcendental philosophy. On the other hand Heidegger makes his revolutionary breakthrough to a hermeneutic phenomenology as early as KNS 1919, 2 which portrays our world of ordinary experiences as thoroughly charged with meaning: “Living in an environing world, it signifies [bedeutet] for me everywhere and always, it is all fraught with world, ‘it’s worlding [es weltet]’” (GA 56/57: 73/61), i.e., it’s contextualizing, it’s articulating itself into the meaningful wholes This insight was the first step in a "breakthrough" by which Heidegger would forge a new philosophical method by combining phenomenology with hermeneutics; he embarked upon an original pathway (Denkweg) via a "hermeneutic phenomenology," in contrast to his mentor Husserl's brand of transcendental phenomenology. Phenomenology is a complex methodology with many researchers finding the esoteric nature of the language both daunting and exclusive.

Heidegger was strongly influenced by Husserl’s phenomenology, but adopted it with an important twist: where Husserl was interested in using it to understand things and ideas, institutions and mental processes, Heidegger from first to last was interested in Being-itself. Martin Heidegger’s hermeneutic view expanded on Husserl’ s work by moving beyond description and giving priority to interpretation, as he proposed that meaning is embedded in everyday contexts .

What followed was total immer-sion in the work of Heidegger and Gadamer and those who had also interpreted and applied, albeit differently, their philosophical ideas. As Finlay (2011) claims, hermeneutic phenomenology does not offer methods of data collection and analysis. 2020-12-28 View Hermeneutic Phenomenology Research Papers on Academia.edu for free.
